The Question:
What state was formerly known as the "Hog and Hominy State"?
The Answer:
The state of Tennessee was once known as the "Hog and Hominy State."
Tennessee has had several nicknames throughout history, including the more common "Volunteer State" and "Big Bend State." But the "Hog and Hominy" didn't have the same staying power and is now obsolete.
Tennessee earned the nickname because of its huge pork and corn production during the 1830s and 1840s.
