Born into a prominent newspaper publishing family, Saralegui came to Miami in 1960. While earning a degree in mass communications and creative writing at the University of Miami, she began an internship with Vanidades, the leading Latin American women's magazine. Saralegui had to learn to write in Spanish, since her education and training had been in English. She worked for several magazines, eventually being named editor-in-chief of the Spanish edition of Cosmopolitan magazine in 1979. Ten years later she resigned to become host of her own TV Show, the Spanish-language The Cristina Show. Shown on the Univision Network, The Cristina Show has roughly 100 million viewers in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. She also copublished a monthly magazine, Cristina the Magazine. In August 2005, she was named one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America” by TIME Magazine.
