Director Stephen Hopkins' Under Suspicion is a remake of the early 1980s French thriller Garde a Vue. This time around, the interrogation drama is set in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Police Captain Benezet (Morgan Freeman) takes in the wealthy, seedy Henry Hearst (Gene Hackman) for questioning about a series of rape-murders. The wary men pounce and pace in a game of cat-and-mouse interspersed with well-conceived flashback episodes.

Under Suspicion functions on the strength of its leads. Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman are credible and accomplished. The script is tailored for such virtuosity since so much of it is just these two in a closed room. Nevertheless, Americans aren't as patient as the French (or at least our movies aren't). Under Suspicion, while slow-moving, never really digs into the nitty-gritty that would make it a standout.
