A consummate interpreter of Romantic music, Tennstedt conducted the works of Mahler, Beethoven, and Bruckner with special sensitivity. Highlights of his career include the position of principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1977); later he served as its director (1983–87) and its conductor laureate. In addition to regular appearances with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, he led performances of Beethoven's Fidelio at the Met (1983–84). His series of Mahler recordings with Angel Records is especially admired.
