54 doesn't quite know what it wants to be. At times, it seems like a documentary, with voice-over narration by the film's star, Shane O'Shea (Phillippe). Other moments the film feels part exposé of the hedonistic late 1970s. The result: a poorly edited mishmash. The film follows O'Shea as he hustles his physical gifts to quickly rise through the ranks of 54 and become a star. Mike Myers clearly gives his all to his characterization of the famed disco's owner, Steve Rubell, but that may be the problem: his performance almost seems like a spoof.
