Having come to Washington to help President Nixon write his memoirs, Sawyer decided to stick around in the capital to report for CBS. She earned a reputation for integrity within the news industry but denies rumors that she was the “Deep Throat” whose leaks to reporters led to Nixon's resignation. In 1984, Sawyer became the first woman to be a correspondent for 60 Minutes, but jumped to ABC to co-host Prime Time Live (1989– ) and later Turning Point (1994). In Jan. 1999 she became the co-host of Good Morning America. Her honors include Emmy Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award for public service, an IRTS Lifetime Achievement Award, a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the USC Distinguished Achievement in Journalism Award. She is married to film director Mike Nichols.
