Country singer and songwriter whose well-known hits include “How Do” (1989) and “ I Feel Lucky” (1993). A graduate of Brown University (1981) and New Jersey native, Carpenter proved you don't have to be from Nashville to crank out country hits. She has won best female vocalist awards from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. Carpenter had been playing in Washington D.C. clubs for ten years winning several Washington Area Music Awards (known as the Wammies), before signing with Columbia Nashville for her first album, Hometown Girl, in 1987. Other albums include Come On Come On (1992), Stones in the Road (1994) which was awarded a Grammy for Best Country Album in 1995, A Place in the World (1996), and Between Here and Gone (2004).
