Although he has appeared in many films, including Broadcast News (1987), in which he played a talented but untelegenic TV reporter, he is best known for a number of comedy-social satire films that he has written, acted in, and directed. These include Real Life (1978), Modern Romance (1981), Lost in America (1985), Defending Your Life (1991), and Mother (1996). He took a New-Age turn in 1999's The Muse.
