A tribute to pop music that doesn't center on big egos. Instead, Grace goes behind the scenes to follow the Carole King–like career of Denise Waverly (Douglas) née Edna Buxton. After winning a Philadelphia talent contest, the folkie moves to Manhattan, sells a song to Joel Millner (Turturro), who instantly evokes Phil Spector, changes her name (to Waverly) and finds herself working at the famed Brill Building writing songs that will eventually become pop standards. Grace nearly sinks when Waverly goes West and explores the Malibu shores and surf music. A graceful evocation of the period when pop became rock.
