Marshall has achieved great success as a writer and producer for television. He cowrote episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Danny Thomas Show, and The Lucy Show before creating and producing Happy Days (1974-84), Laverne and Shirley (1976–83, which costarred his sister, Penny Marshall), and Mork and Mindy (1978–82). He has directed films such as the major hit Pretty Woman (1990) and the reteaming of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride (1999). As an actor, he often appeared on the sitcom Murphy Brown (1994–98).
